Ashley King is a Mexican-Canadian, legally blind actor and playwright based in Mohkinstsis. She is a graduate of Company of Rogues Actors’ Studio, having completed their Master Class actor training program. Throughout her artistic practice, she strives to advocate and to centre her work around equal representation, accessibility and inclusion. With a bachelor's degree in Journalism, she is passionate about exploring the many ways we can share authentic experiences. Her writing—both past and present—focuses on personal lived experiences, striving to bridge divides and foster understanding across diverse perspectives.

Acting credits include Frankenstein (Jupiter Theatre), Argonautika (University of Calgary), Twelve Angry Jurors (Company of Rogues), Shakespeare’s Comedy of Errors (Company of Rogues), and her role on the television show By Hook or By Cook (AMI).

Static: A Party Girl’s Memoir

At the tender age of 18, Ashley King’s life is all about booze, boys, and parties. But when she wakes up blind on holiday, she has to face her darkest depths — grieving a new life she didn’t choose or want. 

Static isn’t your typical inspiration story. It’s a poignant and funny take on the struggles and triumphs of a young woman learning to navigate the world without sight. This dark comedy asks — does everything really happen for a reason? Can joy be found in unexpected places?

This four-part podcast is an audio adaptation of the play Static: A Party Girl’s Memoir. Each episode starts with part of the play, performed by Ashley King as herself and Jaime Cesar as Carolina. Then, in the second half, learn more about this true story as Ashley talks to those who inspired the script.

Throughout the last four years, I took on the daunting challenge of writing my own show. At many, many moments, I truly thought that this would be a hobby piece that would never see the lights of a stage. But last week, we wrapped up the world premier of Static: A Party Girl’s Memoir and oh boy, do I have all the feels. Bringing this show to the stage has allowed me to reclaim the narative of losing my eyesight and instead, turn the most difficult times of my life into moments of joy and laughter. and for that, I am so unbelievably grateful. Thank you to every audience member that came out, sometimes twice, to support this show. I had so much fun laughing and crying with you every night, as I fluttered around on stage like an unhinged drunk disco ball. Thank you to Chromatic Theatre and Inside Out Theatre, my leading lady Jaime Cesar – no one else could have played Carolina with so much grace and comedy, the talented design team, multiple dramaturgs, and the hard working production team. Muchas gracias to Javier Vilalta for your visionary direction, and to Kodie Rowllan, Col Cseke, Bruce Horak, and Rebecca Northan for pushing me to where I am today and for getting this production from page to stage. If you know me well, you probably know the story of how I lost my eyesight. But for those who don’t, I recently had the opportunity to share my experience with the amazing podcast, @actuallyhappening . I haven’t had the chance to share my story in this vulnerable of a way before,  but it was absolutely cathardic. More than anything, I hope this episode sheds light on the reality of methanol poisoning around the world. If it can save just one person, then maybe what I’ve gone through will have been worth it.
